NEW PROGRAM!
"It's Time! Teens Supporting Teens" Peer Education Program on Depression
It's Time! Teens Supporting Teens offers a peer led classroom program which addresses the ingredients required for overcoming teen depression. The program teaches participants how to reduce the stigma that surrounds depression, so that a constructive conversation can open up. Using a unique and compelling video storytelling format, along with interactive games and discussion, the It's Time! peer program offers students, and friends the opportunity to learn how to talk with other teens in trouble and to let them know they are not alone. Participants who complete the program will be able to recognize the signs of depression and know what to do to help a struggling teen find the appropriate treatment and support.
Working with a collaboration of adults and teens from UWM, Milwaukee AHEC, Children’s Health Education Center (CHEC), NAMI, MPS and others, InHealth has developed and is currently piloting a two session program on depression for teens in 8th-12th grades. The program is led by teen peer educators. Forty five members of the CHEC Teen Health Crew will be trained to lead the program this August 14th. The training will also include teen educators from other local organizations. The sessions include the video stories of teens that have experienced all forms of depression as well as activities that challenge stigma and allow for practical application of peer-to-peer support skills.
Coinciding with the curriculum development, the collaborative team has designed a mental health career mentoring process where UWM Master and Doctoral level students in psychology and social work will offer various mentoring connections for the peer leaders. The university students will co-lead the training of trainers and serve as mentors for the teen peer educators.
What can you do to spread the word?
- Let us know of peer leadership/education organizations that may be interested in taking the lead in addressing teen-to-teen mental health support.
- There is room for a few more peer educators to take the August 14th training of trainers and future trainings will be scheduled.
- Tell middle and high schools in your area that the peer education program is available to 8th -12th grade classrooms this fall.

The program gives school staff (especially classroom teachers), adults in youth serving organizations, coaches, and others ideas of how to interact with youth and families. Outcomes include: increased awareness, improved intervention and support skills, and connections to resources.
The staff participates in a pre and post program assessment and a three month follow-up evaluation. They periodically receive email or flyer handouts for skills reinforcement between the in-service training and the three month follow-up evaluation. Trained facilitators meet with the mental health support staff in each setting prior to the in-service to coordinate content with the culture, policies, and procedures of that building.
The in-service package costs $1000 for the full program of pre-meetings, reinforcements and evaluation and $500 for the 2 hour in-service alone. All or a portion of the costs may be subsidized by private funding sources including PTAs, local civic organizations, individuals and foundations. Contact InHealth to discuss.
